Hello all,

So, I went to my local Runnings farm store last week and here in North Dakota we had a really bad blizzard. All of the stores in the state had diverted their chick orders to one location. This store had 1500 chicks to sell during a blizzard. It was crazy seeing all the troughs set up for these birds. Anyways, everything was marked "assorted" and every bird was $1.75
So I got to this one trough of what looked to be all black chicks. I decided to buy three just out of curiosity.
They appear to be all black to me, except the toe nails are light. I will try and get updated photos tomorrow, they are about a week old now. These pics are from the day I brought them home. I know that they probably aren't Ayams but that is the only chick I can find that might be similar. Any thoughts?

I too can't imagine a feed store would get an Ayam Cemani. Check the inside of the chick's mouth. It would be black as well.

Hmmmm....not a Silkie as not 5 toes.

Not an Australorp or Jersey Giant or Sumatra. Wrong down color and feet color.

Check its mouth. EVERYTHING should be black if Ayam Cemani.

The tip of the beak also appears to be lighter. Is it possible that it's some kind of hybrid?

Really cute chicks but AC also have completely black eyes. If the breed wasn’t posted, I always assume chicken mutt ❤️.

I don't know what it is! It certainly is black.

And how on earth did an Ohio feedstore get Ayams in the middle of winter and sell for $1.75????? That doesn't make sense.

But I can't come up with a black chick breed with that absolute black coloring.

Most black birds as chicks are penguins, or have yellow feet, or legs, or something.

Hmmmm....interesting.

I agree with both points- but it is very black and definitelly not a Jersey Giant or an Austrolorp or any sort of bird i've ever seen at a feed store.

Did you happen to ask which hatchery they ordered through? The chick in the second picture has a fifth toe on at least one foot, so definitely not pure Ayam Cemani. I know that Hoover's has a hybrid called Mystic Onyx that is very often all black and can have five toes on one or both feet, so that would be my guess here not knowing where they originated from.
