Can I have small river/landscaping stones as a bed for my run?

Agreed. And it's probably not the best surface for them all the time anyway. I wouldn't think it'd be comfortable walking on rounded rocks all day. Plus they like to dig holes for dust bathing. Now that you have the stones out I'd go with a layer of sand and you should be fine provided your run isn't in a low spot.

agree, plus rocks shift and could brake toes or a leg.

Dear All,
Many thanx for the guidance. So its sand I need? so say many of you. OK, I have a patch of raw caly hardpan. So I need to bring a load of simple sand as in sandbox sand? And this just simply goes on top of the clay?
So the chicks are kinda at the beach?? over time, will the chickens mix the sand and clay together? Sorry for more questions but I want to do it right. Are we talking 1 inch or 3 or 5 inches of sand over my clay? And after the sand is there, I will be able to rake the poop off? I have visions of poop going quicksand and not being able to clean enough. Please advise and thanx again to you all.
Michael
