Can I hear from people that have "lived" with a CRD in their flock

We are going to close our flock because we have sneezing and snotty noses. I just can't cull them, and we have been treating them with Terramycin until our Tylan 50 comes from the Chicken Dr.....and he believes we are dealing with coryza.

I would like to hear from people that have successfully raised a flock that has shown these symptoms.

Thanks!!

I'm not quite sure if my three girls count as a flock, but I've had mycoplasma since the beginning, and had no problems.

The BO in question had one bout of illness in March, when she was 24 weeks old, recovered completely within four days with soluble Tylan, has never passed it to the other hen (a bluebelle hybrid) and has also successfully hatched and raised a chick this summer... which has so far also shown no symptoms of respiratory disease (it is now 11 weeks old).

All in all, it was one episode of less than a week, involving only one hen. I've had no further problems at all.

Well I'm not even 100 percent sure that thats what mine have, but I suspect that the silkie I brought home about a month ago may have had it or have it. Her eye (left only though) got foamy and closed up basically. Then she got the sniffles with clear nasel discharge. Then another hen about three weeks after that got the same symptoms but the bubbly eye was both eyes. Since then one other has got the symptoms. They were on tetracyline for 5 days first (waiting for the Tylan) that didn't help and now they are on the Tylan for the 5th day. They are sounding better but I don't think I'm out of the woods yet. They ate well and were not lethargic or anything. I have ten hens and will now have a closed flock.

It sure is an uphill battle....

I have been consulting with Peter Brown aka The Chicken Dr. His website is www.firststatevetsupply.com He is a GOD send....

I believe that what I have is coryza and between him and posey from here, they have helped immensely!!

You can read all sorts of things on this board, but you have to do what's right for you and your situation!! Most of this "stuff" can be controlled, and there are vaccines for most of it!! Very enlightening talking to Mr. Brown....he's been studying/treating poultry for 40 years!!

I would love to hear from others that have, and are, dealing with respiratory diseases.

Oh no, I hope it's not Coryza. That's a nasty disease. You'd know it though; birds with IC smell horrible, like rotting flesh. It's extremely difficult to get rid of, and your best and most ethical approach is to cull everything that gets sick. VetRx works well. Give 2.5 cc per pound orally. It keeps them from suffocating. Infectious Bronchitis, Mycoplasma, and CRD are more likely culprits.

If antibiotics aren't working it's probably Infectious Bronchitis. Birds are left in a carrier state for 6 months and recovery takes 2-3 weeks. Good news is, most birds develop immunity to it after the initial exposure. I let it run through my flock. I had a few sneezes for a day but that was it. Nothing since.

According to Peter, Coryza does NOT always have a smell.....although mine do have a faint smell of infection. They are doing well on Terramycin, but I am waiting for the other stronger medications that I ordered from Peter.

And a closed flock does mean no new birds, but according to Peter, you CAN add new birds. He gave me all the specifics, and there is a vaccine that he recommended that I will also have on hand.

I am following Peter's advice

and will be treating my birds according to his recommendations. I trust a person that has been doing this for 40 years!!

Lots of patience and perserverance!!
