Can I hear from people that have "lived" with a CRD in their flock

Hi,
I was able to relieve the symptoms of CRD in 2 of my 11 hens by isolating them and giving them tylan and hand feeding and watering them for about two or more weeks. It was labor intensive and I'm sure the rest of the flock are carriers but I have not had another outbreak in 3 years. It was totally worth it and I learned a lot from the experience. It can be done if what you have is CRD. Good luck. i also bided my time with terimycin.

Our state vet said that Coryza doesn't always have a smell also. There is also another medicine called L-S that can be used as a vaccine for CRD, MG and such. He told me that most flocks have been exposed to these things, but have developed a type of immunity. He said there is also another virus called LT that is kind of like Herpes that has some of the same symptoms. I wonder if most people know that it is estimated 75% of Americans would test postive for Herpes even though they never had an outbreak. Same thing with chickens and these diseases. They are a big deal to a commercial flock because they can't deal with sickness and loss of production. I feel like our backyard flocks can take a loss in production if need be to save the birds. It is a personal choice to cull or not. I just think that before a flock is culled it should be known that a lot birds have these diseases and the owners don't know it, because their birds don't show sickness. Wild birds carry this too. Now you just culled your whole flock and a bird flies in to the pen to get a snack, and now guess what happens to your new flock? Same problem. Now if you bring a chicken in that has different germs than your chickens guess who is going to show sickness. It is just like when your kids goto daycare or school for the first time. They are going to get sick, especially if they aren't around other children before. My son stayed home until preschool as an only child. Guess what? He was constantly sick for the first year.

That is EXACTLY what I have found out with talking with Doc Brown and doing much research.....you can cull your whole flock, start over and be right back where you were!! Doc told me last night about a gentleman he is helping that has over a hundred specialty bantam show birds, many that are from the last of breeder lines (VERY valuable and irreplaceable birds). He has a CLOSED flock....guess what

????? He has 4, that's F-O-U-R, diseases going through his flock right now. Ms, Mg, Bronchitis and ????. He is quarantined by the state and is facing uncertainty.

My problem started with bringing in pullets. I quarantined them for a MONTH, have slowly started introducing them to my flock by moving their outdoor "cage" closer to the rest. So they are still separated but only by livestock fencing.....the others can't get to the food or drink. These new birds have not shown any signs until yesterday, after 2 of my hens got sick last week.

So I have done everything I was "supposed" to, and the flock still came down with Coryza.

Wild birds can carry it, you can get it from the feed mill, I am a dental hygienist in a rural area with many farmers, so I can pick it up at work, etc. It was only a matter of time before something like this happened to me....or will happen to anyone that has a flock of chickens.

We can do what we feel and know is the right thing to do and STILL come down with crud.

It's very frustrating, but I love my birds and won't change it for the world. I'm choosing to not cull my whole flock, to treat the ones that are sick, to vaccinate when they are all well, and THAN cull the ones that aren't getting better, as Doc Brown said those are the ones that are the carriers.

This man is the Chicken god and should be awarded something for his efforts!! He has saved my flock from their own fate.

And it's funny that you say that about kids going to daycare/school. It seems that whenever I start a new job, I always get sick....new germs to build an immunity to.
