I've had chicks in the broader that were different sizes/ages. They have all been very accepting! Never have had an issue 
I also use pine chips! It also helps to add a fresh smell. Don't use cedar, it's bad for their respiratory system. We also put roosts and toys for them to climb and play on! Good luck!
