can I sell the extra eggs?

putting a sign up may be a violation in its self.

some areas have rules about signage. especially if you are residential ask about signs before putting them up.

the city i formally lived in, even having magnetic signs while the car was in my driveway was illegal. i had to remove them as soon as i pulled into my drive. same with the lighted sign on top of my vehicle. none allowed on my grass or on my own porch.

ask first about everything so you don't shoot yourself in the foot.

hope you get great answers and results.

You need to check with your state's dept of agriculture -- they'll be happy to send you a list of all the state's rules and regulations. Then check with your local ordinances to see if you can sell from home or if you have to go to a farmer's market, or whatever.

I live in a very rural area in NM, and I'm lucky to have no regulations on egg sales. I can even sell them to the local store (tiny, 100yo building, funky little place) for $1.89/dozen. Sometimes they even call me to ask if I've got extra eggs because they have customers looking for homegrown eggs.

I prefer to sell them myself, though, just because I can get a little more money for them.

I've heard of people setting eggs in an ice chest, with an "on your honor" box to drop their money in, and selling them at the end of their driveway, etc. I've thought about it, but I don't know if I'll try it yet.

If you aren't sure about it being legal you could either join a farmer's market or see if a small local feed store will sell them for you. Our local feed store sells eggs for people and usually has huge boxes of them sitting around. They'll also sell apples and other produce. Most chain stores will not do this. A farmer's market will have their own rules and membership fee to make it legal.

Wifezilla,

I'm in Boulder and considering expanding our flock to about 15 chickens. I would love to sell the eggs to friends and neighbors, and am hoping that the People's Republic has not passed their own ordinance banning the sale of eggs. A quick perusal on their "revised code" site only turns up a ban on selling chicks, not eggs. Let's hope that's the case!

I would keep a copy of a printout of the State law in case the locals try to give you any trouble. Their MAY be a city law, but if there isn't, that might hold them off for a bit.

OH! Don't forget to play up the "cage free" "free range" aspect of your chickens (assuming that's how you do it). Even have pictures of your hens with you when you sell eggs. Then charge those granola heads a premium. Be sure to be extra snooty to them and imply they are animal abusers if they don't want to pay extra for your eggs

I live in New Hampshire and everyone sells everything. Lots of people sell eggs and it is leagal. However, A freind told me that his home owners insurance told him he couldnt' do it or they would drop him.

I'd say the easiest thing to start with is just spread the word with friends and family you are selling fresh eggs. You may find you have so many takers you don't even need to worry about markets, driveway signs or craigslist ads. I only have a few hens, but a ton of people that would buy from me if I had more to sell.

It is not legal to sell your eggs in Indiana. They must be shipped once a week to the correct Houston Texas address or you could face severe fines and possible confinement. PM me and I will supply you with that correct address.

I'm just sayin------------------------

I sell mine by word of mouth at work. I'll come in with a dozen in my hand and they're sold before I make it to my locker! I label mine as "mixed grade" and have a spot for an expiration date. In the beginning I had to explain that "Free Range" doesn't mean free eggs. LOL
