You can certainly use a reptile incubator to hatch chicken eggs. There are however alternatives to the ReptiPro 5000. There is another incubator on the market, called the ReptiHatch 6000 which is identical to the ReptiPro, the only difference being the price. The ReptiHatch 6000 costs about $70.00 less for the same thing.

There are so many choices, and it can get so confusing! It hold temps/humidity really well so far, so I am happy.

Hi, I was looking up the ReptiHatch 6000 and it sells for $184.99. I got my Reptipro 5000 for $140 shipped. Looks like the exact same thing including the item description etc. I am sure there are others that are following this thread that may want to purchase one, please post where you found it to be $70 less. Thanks

Wow I just started a thread about the Reptipro5000 not knowing this one existed.

I have a few questions:

How exactly did you maintain humidity?
Just by the amount of water??

Did you find it difficult finding time to turn the eggs by hand 5 times a day?
Even with school/work?

Why did you set the temps to above 100? It wouldn't hold the lower temp??

In my opinion... its a nice incubator, but as with all incubators, you need to get used to it. Yes, the temps are highest in the top of the unit and the temp is "read" at the top of the incubator, so the display temp differs from what is the actual temp. I have my eggs on the highest rack and I have the display on 104-105. On the tray, its holding at 99.8 to 100.5 Humidity is at 45% with a small tupperware of water on the bottom. I do find it a bit of a pain to turn the eggs, but I only turn them 3 times a day. The temp recovers quickly from opening as well as the humidity, so its great when you need to candle. I have silkie eggs in there now for the first time and on day 5 I have 6 developing. The others were scrambled by the PO ( broken air cells ).. Good luck and get to know it first
