Can I use sand as baby chick grit?

Buy chick Grit it's not expensive and lasts a long time..

I still have chick grit from 20 years ago, so it does last a long time. I always start to sprinkle it on the food (like salting food) at 2 days old. They don't need grit if eating only chick feed, but what chicks never pick & eat something in the bedding?
