Can I use sand as nesting material?

Just cleaned out the coop, layed down sand in the run but I'm short of hay (my usual nesting material), just wondering if anyone has any ideas on using sand instead. Any advise is welcomed, thanks all

Yes, I have one of my nest boxes with sand in it, as I have a broody hen with chicks sleeping in there at night (on the floor- it is a covered kitty litter pan), and the little ones poop in there at night. I scoop it in the morning with a kitty litter scoop. My other boxes have shavings in them.

I have sand on the floor of the coop as well in a thin layer. I scrape it every other day with a plastic rake and use a kitty litter scoop on that too.

Cool, I might give it a go one day or do fifty-fifty. Right now I'm using sugar cane husks until I get some hay. Thanks.
