Im thinking about getting a Button quail (Chinese painted quail) & i wanted to know if i could use play sand instead of pine shavings?
Also do they do better in pairs & if they do, do males fight?

I don't know anything about quail but, if you go to "Other backyard poultry" forum on here you will find threads for guineas, quail, ducks, geese, etc.
I'm sure they can answer your question and many others. Welcome to Backyard chickens.

Sand works well on adult quail. Helps to absorb smells and keep them dry.

Yes, you need to keep them in pairs only. They are highly territorial and you need to keep them one male to one female only.

Definitely stop by our quail section for more help with your birds. :-)

Thanks, so sand only works for adult or chicks to?
Also i couldnt get the last part and i was wandering if you could keep 2 males together?
sorry about all the questions

Quote: It is not advised to use sand in brooders with chicks. They can mistake the sand for food and eat so much of it an die. So it is best to wait on the sand until they are adults and know better. :-)

Some species of quail you can keep two males together. But Button quail can be aggressive. So you are better off either getting two males mates, or keeping them separated. Two males together can hurt each other. And you should never keep two pairs together either. Just two birds, male and female together in the same enclosure. :-)
