Can I worm while they molt?

Thank you both for your information. I THINK I've got a plan worked out now! I'm glad to know to use the wazine FIRST and that it can be REPEATED to get the adult worms out.
So does this sound like a good plan????
Use the wazine now on all chicks and then again in 3 week intervals to keep the adult worms all flushed out until the chicks that hatched on 6/1/09 are 4 months old (which will be 10/1/09 so that means I will have to give the wazine again on 9/1 and 9/22 and then it will be OK to give them ALL fenben 3 weeks later on 10/13 ?

What age is it safe to give the wazine? (I have some that aren't even a week old) Is this going to mess up my above de-worming schedule?

Once I treat with the fenben, I will wait a couple of weeks and then do the fecal egg count.

Is it really possible to be worm FREE???? Or, do you just have to do the best you can?

You can use wazine repeated for the babies (see below). Just in case someone else is reading who might always want to do Wazine, I do have to say that if one chooses to just do Wazine 'forever' you'll never kill the larva that way and get stuck in a cycle of repeatedly worming (which I feel causes eventual resistance and of course you have to toss eggs). But yes on the babies, you don't really have to do that often. Do the wazine now on younger birds (no younger than 4 to 6 weeks I believe is the age) and I'd repeat in 6 weeks, not any more soon really. Then you should be able to give them fenbendazole or another broad-spectrum at 4 months. Then twice annually - every six months.

If you do that, I think you should get your chicks about on fenben in fall (a good time for worming because of the lack of heat stress) and I do my wormings in fall and spring.

It's not possible to be worm free unfortunately. But you can just eliminate heavy infestations and keep things as low level as you can. I feel that's very important because of the scarring, digestive tract inflammation, nutrient loss, etc etc that go with worms being present. Some people say "Ohhh birds can live with worms" but you really see the toll taken as the bird gets over 2 years old. If you're doing pets and breeders, it's nice to get production of eggs (and just general health) for a longer period of time.

Did I answer your questions, all of them? I want to make sure.

Yes! You did answer the last of my questions on this matter! I think I got it now! I was waiting to hear back from you to clarify my plan and now I know what I need to do. Thank you so much!

Nathalie - not to bug you but I had a couple of questions on page 2. You indicated not to do in hot weather - we are 100+ right now - so will have to wait for fall.

Also, could apple cider vinegar help to prevent them from getting worms or do you think at 25 weeks they already have them.

Silly, you're not bugging me at all! I don't worm in hot weather - if I can help it , but I worm in hot weather if it needs doing. I just like to aim my twice-annual maintenance wormings to the fall and spring if I get the chance. That being said, I did have to use ivermectin in the summer because I was late on my spring worming and I had a turkey that picked up lice, sucking lice, so I hadn't a choice. The hens were a bit under condition for my tastes anyway so I just did it.

I don't believe acv helps prevent worms at all. However I do know that it helps keep the digestive tract less friendly for bacteria, parasites, and helps the pH to be healthier and therefor helps the bird use more of their food. Those actions will help a bird be a little more resistant to the issues worms cause (secondary bacterial infections, inflammation, nutrient loss, etc). So it helps - just not to expel or necessarily repel. It's great stuff though! I'm a huge believer in it - if it's organic unfiltered. Otherwise not so much. The non-organic doesn't have the live bacteria, etc, that the organic does.

You can help combat any stress from worming by doing the wazine-first if your bird fits the categories I (think I ) have listed above. Or any time you worm, use yogurt that day and the next day. You can also do a follow up cleanse of a little molasses (just a tiny bit) in their water the following day, a little bit of applesauce in a damp mash of crumbles and water in the morning.
