Rain barrel tadpoles this time of year likely to be tree frogs of some sort. To my knowledge they are not toxic. Your birds will have to decide whether they are tasty and worth the effort.

If intent is to promote survival of froglets, then you may need to ensure they have dense vegetation close by that can provide a refuge from chickens and the adult frogs. Look into habitat requirements and see if you can make things better. The way most people keep chickens is not conducive to frogs as insects are depleted and vegetation is either not of ideal species makeup or abundance.

Yes is is safe for your hens to eat tadpoles but it is rather difficult to find scuba masks, swim fins, and spear guns in chicken sizes so that your hens can chase down tadpoles under water.

Like centrachid suggested, if your goal is to encourage frogs, well nothing eats 'wittle' bitty baby frogs quite like big grown up frogs. .

I saw one of my chickens swallow an adult frog (in one swallow!) the other day so I would imagine tadpoles would be fine. I know my ducks love them...I have also noticed a huge decrease in frogs at my place from last year so I'm guessing the chickens and ducks are clearing them out, or it could be that we just haven't gotten as much rain this year as we usually do...
