so anyone know what kind of chicks are sold at Gillums Feed And Seed Store in Newport?? I know i have rirs,, im thinking others are golden comet....is golden comet same thing as a sex link? im new to this as you can probably see
I've been screwing around with the genetics calculators - I can't get to yellow from red, even by throwing in some gold and buff. So I'm going to have to say no.
It sounds like your brooder is way too hot, particularly if the heat lamp is heating your entire room! I only use regular light bulbs - at 7 weeks, they're getting 25 watts for light and no heat. I believe I used 100 watts for the first week, then 75 for two weeks, 60 for two weeks and 40 for a week. I want them to feather out so they can GO OUTSIDE
Your yellow chick is not a RIR. It is probably a golden comet/yellow sex link. Your "RIR" are probably not RIR, which is what Chris was saying. You very likely got production reds, which are a RIR cross with New Hampshire. If they are RIR they are a far cry from the heritage strains of the breed.
Most feed stores get their chicks from large hatcheries, like McMurray or Meyer or Cackle.
