Can silkies survive the cold?

Can silkies survive in an outdoor coop that doesn’t have insulation? It gets low as 40 degrees Fahrenheit where I live.

I think so but I'm not sure I just got my first 4 silkies and I'm wondering the same thing!

Nighttime. The weather get as low as 40 degrees. They are full grown.

40 degrees is nothing to chickens! I have a silkie and tiny Belgian D’uccles that do great with our winter nighttime temps of 15-20 degrees.

My understanding on silkies is to make sure they can stay dry - especially when it's cold.

My silkies survived the negative 20 degree cold snap we got this year. They do need to have shelter where they are out of wind and precipitation.

Hi!

Yes they’re cold hardy—but, make sure of a few things…1. They’re fully feathered. 2. There is no way that they can get wet, an open water source can be disastrous in the cold, even a few splashes if it’s below freezing. 3. Remember that wind chills can be considerably colder that the ambient temperature, so check for drafts.

I feel pretty confident with all my babies unless it gets below 30F, or sustains near freezing temps, then I put the producers pride (zero-contact) heat plate out for them, bc it can’t hurt!
