We now have a skunk living around our house. I want to know if they go after the chickens or eggs, or will they leave them alone.
Also, we have a hawk building a nest in our tree. It hasn't gone after the chickens yet but will it, or are the chickens too big for the hawk?

I don't like hawks. And, I'd like to kill the ones going after my chickens. But, it is a FEDERAL offense to even "harass" a stinking hawk!

I promise, if she has a nest in your tree, she will be feeding chicken dinners to her offspring.

It must be too wet down here for skunks. We don't have them. But, if you do a search here for "skunks", you will read of many folks that have had skunks killing their chickens. Some folks here have had very good success using DP (dog-proof) traps to catch them. A gun works even better.

Yep, we had a skunk go after chicks once. Left three missing legs and wings and barely alive. And get rid of the hawk, I'll give you some more info in the morning, but I'm too tired to type much more tonight, sorry. Search hawks and you'll get more info than you could ever read.

Best Of Luck,

Ms.B :)

People like hawks because they are an important part of the Eco system that have been around for centuries. I have hawks too but I have built a chicken run that is very predator proof. I let them free range for 3-4 hours in the evening. ....they are supervised the entire time. I also have hiding places and plants to help them if trouble should arise. I live in Idaho, predators (especially hawks) are alway around.

I agree CityChicken, they are an important part of the ecosystem. But I won't stop hating their guts (RIP Buddha, died happy and free) until they kill more snakes and mice than my chickens. ( Sorry, I'm very sensitive about hawks, so whatever I say, I don't want anyone to think I'm picking a fight with anyone, I just really don't like hawks, and they make me sorta angry just thinking about them. So ya know, whatever happens on this thread, I'm usually pretty nice. :). )

Its okay if you dislike hawks. Everyone is different. I prefer to live and let live. The area surrounding my home is full of predators and I'm sure I will be seeing more since I brought chickens home. That's the risk I took by getting my lovely chicks. Hawks are definitely going to be my main aggressor. I have 3 dogs so even though I have a well manicured lawn it must reek of dog because I have never seen any other 4 legged creatures on my lawn.
