Can someone confirm this is normal?

Hi, I’ve got 4 RSLs about 20 weeks ish. Two have been laying consistently for 2-3 weeks. My third was walking up the coop steps, and laid (her first egg)a shelless egg. It happened so fast and I was straightening up and not paying close attention to her. She cackled and I looked and there was a splattered egg. No shell to be seen anywhere. I’ve been reading around and read it shelless eggs can happen to first layers. How do I know the didn’t crack inside of her? What should I do? I don’t know if it matters but they’re all eating layer feed and oyster shells. And every few days eggs with the shell.

Generally eggs without shells are pushed out before the shell can be applied. It happens more often in point of lay Pullets because the sensations are new to them. They probably feel some pressure as the egg is traveling down the reproductive tract, than as it's in the shell gland.

Most eventually get it right as they get used to it all. It generally has nothing to do with calcium. They sometimes can have troubles because an egg without a shell doesn't glide out smoothly. As long as nothing is prolapsed, and the hen is acting okay there's generally nothing to worry about.

I think people new to chickens have often only had eggs from the store, and those eggs are perfect, not because they were laid perfectly, but because the eggs were sorted, with the less than perfect being used in manufactured food, not for consumer cooking.

There is a lot of normal variance in eggs - nearly all of it out of control of people. Some people worry excessively about the diet, but seriously do you eat a potato chip once in a while?

Good basic feed, clean water, protection from the elements and predators is about the best you can do. If they are eating, active and laying - they are fine. Even if they have a glitch occasionally with an egg.

A potato chip once in a while??? Please I’ll eat a whole bag if someone doesn’t stop me! Don’t get me started on store bought eggs. I thought I was allergic to eggs for YEARS, turns out only store bought eggs kill me.
I give my girls standard feed and such, but let me tell you they have plenty of scraps too. Green beans, watermelon etc. And fyi I worry excessively about everything Hopefully this time next year, I’ll be chilled out.

Me too, (about the potato chip bag) I hope you don't think I was scolding you, I worried too in the beginning, and then I realized - well some are going to make it, and some are not... and really what I can do about that is give them the best go - food, water, and shelter. And the rest is out of my control. While losing one is sad...well then you can get chicks!

I didn’t think you were scolding just slapping me with reality. I’m the type of person who needs that from time to time. Y’all have to keep me between the ditches! Otherwise I’ll have a measuring tape out there comparing crop size lol. I had actually mellowed out a bit, then they started laying..well now here comes the anxiety again. I LOVE chick season!!! I have a wishlist already..yes I do have issues.

We all do - and we all understand - you see just because I am an old chicken lady - well I am still a crazy chicken lady, and so are most of the posters here! haha

Right now, I am thinking about adjusting my flock for winter, separating out some cockerel chicks, picking cull birds and to make it just a bit worse -yes, I set some eggs under Gramma Feathers (who has no business going broody in August). Crazy

But if you want anxiety - set eggs! longest 21 days ever!
