No, I think you read intentions into the comment that weren't there. I think it was just meant as a suggestion. I know it's frustrating when you lose hatches. A lot of us have been there. I recently had one hatch with a butt hole so small that she couldn't poop and two that had to wear leg braces to staighten their legs (one I believe may even be a dwarf). Chicks seem to have a higher rate of mortality and/or health issues than other baby animals. Shipped eggs can be a problem too because rough handling can effect the viability. If you suspect that the TV is a problem, put the bator in another room. I put mine in a spare bathroom. If the hatch is better, then you know that your hubby might have been right, and we will all have learned something valuable.

Crystal,

you have had successsful hatches before. Was the incubator always near the tv or has that changed since youve been having problems?

also, i would think the chicks would have problems during development (and die earlier) rather than at hatching if it was from the tv. this leads me to believe its still a humidity issue.

Yes, I think this is a very good question; one we can all learn from.

I think it's also interesting how many posts have recently been put out regarding this same issue. I'm beginning to wonder if the time of year has anything to do with it?

She was keeping the humidity at 60 during the last 3 days, so that leads me to believe it was too low. She is going to jack it to 70-75 and see what happens. Does everyone agree?

What breeds are you trying to hatch? Some breeds are more difficult (marans, ameracauna, anything tufted) and you could try going to the breeder or chicks for sale threads to ask those who are successfully hatching your breed. Also, shipped eggs often have detached air cells or other problems that don't promote a good hatch no matter how well they are packed. We recently tried hatching some shipped marans eggs and the marans threads and folks on BYC were very helpful - we had 4 out of 12 hatch (1 died within 24 hours) and consider ourselves lucky. Please don't take offense at other's suggestions - it's hard to judge a person's intent without the tone of voice to listen to. The comment about moving the 'bator is just practical. If you believe the electronics might be the problem, there really are only 2 choices that I see - move the electronics or move the 'bator.

horsejody was the bator near a tv? I'm kidding, I deal with contracts judges and attorneys all day long. When hear a professional use the phrase "couldn't you just" to me, means couldn't you just do this and don't waist my time anymore.

At 6 am I woke up to a dog running around my yard with my favorite rooster hanging out of his mouth. I thought that my rooster was dead. He isn't, just in shock or something and the feathers are plucked from his back. My pens where torn up again. Yes I am having a bad morning so far. I am worried about my hatches. Most of my chickens are very rare and hard to find. I just got a trio of lavender silkies that it took me two years to get.
Kimber is still being a sarcastic poster. I have no intentions on responding to her or anyone else that wants to follow her lead

It seems you got the pretty obvious answers that most would be willing to suggest..move the bator. I don't know that continuing to argue over what you "think" somebody means, even after they apologized is really productive, so I'll go ahead and close this thread. Good luck with your incubation.
