Can someone recommend a rooster breed ??

I have a 3 week old Australorp (I think) and he has started pecking at my daughters hand. Anyway to stop this now?

I am not even sure that he is a he....just the personality, and the fact that he always has his head held up VERY high.

Some of our roosters are brothers, so that makes it easier cause they grew up together and just establish their own pecking order. In the other cases, we have the new roos isolated at first; then, after that, we put them in a pen where the other roos can see em, and communicate with them through the bars, but they can't do any serious damage; they start the pecking order that way. It is funny to watch them puffing up at each other and pulling grass, while the hens stand around admiringly. After a week or two of that, we let the new roo out and we just hang out with the flock for a while, and off and on for the next few days, to see how they interact; usually they have no problem establishing a peaceable pecking order with no bloodshed, and, in fact, it is neat to watch the roos divide up the hens, and communicate with each other about predators and other stuff chickens talk about, I guess. They are all free range, so they have lots of room to spread out if they want to, too.

I have a standard Cochin and he's a great boy! I'd definatly get another! And I may think it was a fluke, but I did take on three more cochin roos the other day, one standard and two bantams. They are not with any hens, but the big guy seems very friendly, reminds me alot of my boy Stu. The little guys are alittle more fiesty.

If your ready now I'd gladly give you this one! So far he's a very nice boy, he's big and black, and quite a handsome boy, I'd keep him myself if I didn't already have Stu.

I'll take my "production red" roo anyday, he is protective of his clan, and makes me feel like the piped piper because when I have treats, he bring his flock to me or anyone else with treats for his "ladies"

I have had RIR, Buff Orps, Light Brahama and Blue Orpington roosters in with my flocks...Of those the only one I would never have again around kids is a RIR....he was horrible.....That production red is a handsome fellow...that would work well in a RIR flock...

This is a poor picture of my boss roo Papa.He looks alot like your production red. He is a rir/buff orp mix and is an absolute sweetheart and gentleman. His spurs are over 3 inches long and no hen bear injuries. He is gentle with the hens and us. He even protected my DH when our mean black Austrolorpe roo attacked him. That is one I will never have again! I have stepped on him, tripped over him,and accidently knocked him over and he never complains. He does not fight much at all, really only when one of the other roos mistreat the hens. He crows. but not often. He never eats treats, but gives them to the hens.

I think his calm manner spreads to the other roos, because I have a variety(white leghorn, speckled sussex, cucoo marans, buff brahma, and a few mised bantams) and they don't fight with each other very much. Once,Papa got sick and his place was taken over by another roo, and anarchy started. The hens were mistreated and everyone fought. Once Papa got better and re-asserted himself as alpha roo, things settled down.
