Can someone recommend a rooster breed ??

My white cochin roo is a sweetie to me and my boys when we go into the coop. Sometimes gets a little ruff with the girls if they don't squat and hold still though.

I have 3 mature roosters, a barred rock, a RIR, and a BO. I handle all of them on a regular basis.
All are very good with humans.
The best flock protectors I have are the barred rock and the RIR.

Not all RIR's are mean, and I didn't get this one until after he was a year old.

You could look around for a RIR with even temperment to match your girls, or go with a barred rock.

Well next spring I was going to start to mix in some different breeds so I'm not necessarily tied to RIR's at this point. I got them primarily because they were available and great layers.....ameracaunas look pretty nice.....

We are lucky, I guess..we have eight roos and they are all sweeties. But, my all-time favorites were my boy Whitey, and his son Jack Frost; Whitey was pure bred White Leghorn; his son a White Leghorn mix. Both smart, funny, friendly and full of personality; Jack Frost always befriends the quiet and shy hens, so that makes him even more valuable as he provides protection for them. Whitey lived to be 10 years old, and died defending his flock from a weasel. But we also have a Barred Cochin (dignified, quiet, smart and responsible); a black Araucauna mix roo (dead serious and very polite); another Araucauna roo (very tame and quiet, and beautiful), a Speckled Sussex roo (keeps to himself, but polite). Our other three mixed breed/ Araucauna cockerels are very shy, but polite; we haven't had them long enough to see how they'll turn out. I really kinda think that, although breed can be a factor, the roos learn from each other and also respond to a lot of friendly treatment.

So how do you keep so many roos together....and more importantly, getting along ??? I was just going to get one for my (currently) 9 girls.....in the spring I might get 3 or 4 more pullets but my coop is 8'x8' so not too many more....could, or should I get more than one roo while still keeping peace in the coop ?

Ideally I want roo(s) that are protective of the girls without being too hard on them, good with my girls, 15, 9, & 3yrs old, and big, pretty, & nice to look at when I have friends over....(and for me too darn it !!

I gave away a Austrolorp Roo last wk he was 7 wks and pecking everyone (hard)

We have a wonderful silkie roo but, I don't think he would be a very good protector!

We also have a buff brahma, dark brahma & buff plymonth rock they are young so I don't know who will stay!!!

I heard all were nice ((we will see))

my light brahma buff orfington mix... elvis.

he is very sweet and takes care of his harum. he does put the other rooster in their place, mostly my black polish rooster on my profile pictures, he is something else, trys to flog me once and a while, but I just chase him away. He is not very friendly, only he looks so cool I keep him around.
I also have a easter egg rooster who is very laid back and a pushover.

Buff Orps are hands down what I would suggest for the friendliest big boy roosters. Of course, there are exceptions in every breed and a lot has to do with how you raise them and their environment.
