Can someone tell me how this came from my Chocolate Cuckoo Orpingtons?

I have a trio of chocolate cuckoo orpingtons, and while most of the chicks i hatch have the cuckoo barring, some of them don't and look like this: What the heck?

My guess would be recessive genetics in the parent stock... if you haven't had an escaped chicken from another pen accidentally co-mingle ever.
