Why wouldn’t I want to handle or pet my rooster? My lavender Orpington is 6 months old. He just started paying attention to me. Someone suggested picking him up every day. I kept him cuz I thought they were supposed to be friendly.

Friendliness and temperament is up to the individual bird, not breed.
You don't want male livestock to be comfortable in your personal space, you want them to respect you and people in general.
I give mine quick keel massages on the roosts at night, he likes those.
