It is not hard to get chicks tamed, although mother can certainly help or hinder process. When hen is being counter productive, then either have interactions so she can not see you or tame her as well.
Before thinking outside the box to tame all hens as they were growing up, the hens I had were of the face flogging sort that would come at you and chase kids like me quite some distance before breaking off. Not giving up, I placed a piece of plywood between me and chickens and tossed insects to one end so chicks would see them. It took a couple tosses before chicks would come around to my side without mother. Then I could interact.
Being a little smarter now, I pen the crazy hens in the 24" square rabbit cages and offer the chicks mealworms through that. Even the face floggers tame down with that, especially if move slowly and chicks start producing the comfort sound associated with eating something they really like. Last spring I was able to break a face flogger to the point I can now trust her to fly up on shoulder, only when called, to take treats. Same hen now suitable for working with kids and she helps calm two subsequent broods for me.
