I have some cochins sitting on some easter egger eggs and they tried to peck one of the chicks to death. His head is pretty bloody and horrible looking, should I try to save him, or just put him out of his misery? I'm so upset! I will never let this nasty hen sit on another nest ever again!

isolate it! clean out the wound with neosporn ointment. hydo peroxide kills good germs as well so go with the antibiotic cream. can you post some pic's
and i would post in injury section.

I don't want to post any pics its very disturbing to look at. I have the chick in a box under a heat lamp for now and I'll see how he's doing in the morning. My husband put neosporin on its head and he seems to think that the chick might make it, but I'm just not sure.

I have seen BYC members post about badly injured chickens that recovered well. They can really surprise you as to how tough they are. You need to really trust your gut as you are there, but they can really heal up from bad situations. Good Luck

I'm sure she doesn't feel like eating now so give her treats like scrambled egg and a little sugar in her water. If you have to put drops of water on the top/tip of her beak so the water goes gently into her mouth and hopefully she will swallow it. She can last a few days without food but not water. Especially under the light.

Best of luck and I'll keep you in my thoughts.

I found a chick tonight I thought was dead. We have hens sitting and they are in a closed pen. I went to check on them and almost stepped on a completely dirt crusted semi-flat chick. I picked it up to dispose of it and saw it take a breath. I jumped and almost dropped it. Ran in the house got warm water running and submerged all but it's head in really warm water and it started kicking as I was cleaning it off. It still had a film on it from the egg and the dirt and gunk had dried on it. Even it it's eyes and mouth. Still had part of it's yolk sac. I got him warmed up and cleaned off. He's very bruised all over and swollen. Still tucked in the 'in the egg' position. Keeping my fingers crossed for it. Good luck to your's. It's so sad for them to have this kind of start. I'm crossing my fingers for your little one as well.

The chick that I found almost dead is still alive. It is bruised on about 90% of his body, and quite swollen around the head neck and a leg. He's unable to hold his head up yet but if I hold his head up and put a drop on his beak he has a swollow reflex. I've made a sugar water solution and added a small drop of bird vitamin to it. There are actually no open wounds on him, thank goodness, but I'm unsure at this point if there are any broken bones or brain damage. Still keeping my fingers crossed. Will get up during the night to give fluids and take him to work with me if he's still alive. Please send good vibes his(her) way.

Well my chick is still alive this morning. I gave her some water in a dropper and put some more neosporin on her head. I'm not even sure if she has eyes or not, they may have been pecked out, but its a hard to tell. She's starting to hold her head up on her own now and was actually standing up a little last night, but not this morning. Will she eventually eat on her own or will I have to feed her with a dropper? If so, how do I do that?
