Can this severely pecked chick survive?

You might have to feed her for a few days. I had a chick this spring that kept getting in the wrong nest several times. The first time they almost ripped his head off( you could see his neck bones), that healed, then they tried taking a whole leg off and that healed. His last wound was a puncture wound to the chest. I think he finally learned you don't mess with broodies.

We named him Trooper and he went just went to live at another home last week.

Just make sure you are giving him water and maybe some baby vitamins. Remember there might be a reason they discarded the chick, hens seem to sense when things aren't right.

This is Trooper and his mama - you can see his puncture wound:

I don't think that there is anything wrong with this chick, apparently cochins just don't accept other chicks and this one hatched from a green egg from my aurucanas. The chick is not as active this morning as it was last night. I've given it some sugar water. This little one almost had its head ripped off too. Basically no skin left on its head and possibly one eye missing. Its very upsetting. I'm glad to hear your little Trooper did so well, that is encouraging.

I had a similar situation, I figure the chick wouldn't make it but stuck it under a broody in the coop just the same b/c I didn't have time to deal with the situation just then. Here it is a six weeks later and ole little one eye is fine and thriving in the care of his mama hen. I guess if its meant to be, it will be. I just wish he didn't turn out to be a rooster, I don't need another roo and he might be a bit difficult to rehome. I guess time will tell.

I'm getting really concerned now because this chick is almost a day old and not really holding its head up. Could this just be due to the injuries or could it just be dying? I suppose only time will tell. The chick is just lying under the heat lamp head down, wings spread out and when I try to give it more water, it jumps away from me. I'm afraid I'll choke it to death if I try to give it too much water?

Did you put anything on the wound? I put neosporin on mine. It healed up pretty quick. He never did grow feathers in the spot where they filleted his neck though. It sounds like maybe he is too hot? That is how my chicks lay when they are getting too hot.

If you post a photo we can help with the trauma of the situation. This happened to another poster about a week ago and when she posted photos everyone came to her aid and gave all sorts of helpful information.
Her 2 chicks were scalped completely.
Good Luck with your chickie and keep us updated so we can chime in and help!!

go get poly vit's from the drugstore. they are in a bottle, liquid formula and for infants. Drop some in her water!!! It will help her ...........she is weak and needs a pick me upper

Ya know sometimes things look worse than they are. I have a CM that a coon got and I coulda swore she got tore right to the bone. I put neo.... spray on for three or four days. After rinsing with water with a little dish soap. I did give her left over amoxicillian also. Then rinsed her a week later with peroxide then waited a few days did it again and just did it again yesterday. Weds will be week 3 since the attack. Anyhow it looks real good and there is skin. no feathers tho.
My point is don't give up till they stop breathing, as long as they show some improvement. If they's eating and drinking and pooping things are hopeful.

Thanks for all the advice and concern. But she died this morning. I was really getting worried and her condition just seemed to get worse. She wasn't peeping anymore, and was gasping for breath. She died before I had to put her out of her misery. Its very upsetting, but it was a tough call last night when the injuries were brand new and she was a little perkier it seemed like she might make it, but I think the trauma finally set in. Over all the injuries were really severe and I probably shouldn't have even tried to save her in the first place. I should have just ended her misery right away, but some times its just really hard to make that call. She wasn't even holding her head up, let alone eating or drinking. I did give her some sugar water in a dropper, but she continued to decline. I'm really sad.

California Ducken, this chick was basically scalped too, really bad and possibly had eyes gone too but it was hard to tell, do you know if the other person's chicks survived the scalping? We did put neosporin on it, and it wasn't too hot, so I guess it was just too much truama.
