Can this severely pecked chick survive?

No the other chicks did not survive. I didn't want to say that in my post so you wouldn't get discouraged. They died the next day to. I got to see my hen first hand start the head pecking. The chicks don't know what is happening....they are sooo trusting and keep running to the hen. SAD
The hen grabs the chick with its feet and holds it down so it can't get away and starts to peck the head, ears and eyes until it stops moving.............
Killing is the intent. I caught mine when it was on top of its own chick and just starting to peck........the chick was screaming so blood curdling I freaked and in the intense moment of survival/rescue mode almost (but didn't) hurt my hen. I had to logically sort things in my mind quickly and realize that it's just what happens and no blame is to be placed on any animal. I snatched up my chick and no sooner the hen with me a foot away was holding down another chick. So she was given to my husband and put in the garage until I did triage on the rest of the chicks. Little ears were bloody, eyelids were bitten and bleeding (not real bad). Needless to say, I took all her chicks away and raised them myself.
She was a perfectly great chicken after (non more chickies). She was just done being a mom after only 3 weeks.
So I preach always BE CAREFUL with ALL the rest. Just keep a watchful mother hen eye on them.......or should I say watch them like a hawk.....
We all know that saying here on BYC!
I am so sorry about your chickie.

I am sorry that your chick didn't make it. I got up during the night to give my little one some more sugar/vitamin water and it was dead also. It's head and neck were so swollen I think it would have had brain damage. At least it didn't die cold and caked with dirt and filth, it was clean and warm and in a soft bed. I'm sure yours went in a similar fashion. We did the best we could.

I might be giving away the offending hen. I have another hen with a brood of 11 chicks who now hates this hen and fights with her all the time. Its almost as if she knows what the cochin hen has done. This particular hen will adopt other chicks.

Thanks for the concern, its nice to know that I'm not alone. Its so discouraging to lose an animal after having successfull rehabilitated others in the past, but I guess I can't expect 100% success rate all the time.
I'm glad the little chick died in a warm soft bed and not in the dirt either.
Thanks again for all your advice and concern. Still sad though
