Its getting nicer here in Indiana, can I let Tumbles & the flock play out side? I have something I can put them in with an open bottom & top to corral them.

If they aren't under heat anymore and mostly feathered, they can play outdoors on nice days. Mine started outside at about 4 weeks for an hour or so at 60f and moved to the unheated coop at 5 weeks.

No, they still have heat. They are a week old. I just thought maybe with the temp rising out side it might be okay. They're so curious about whats going on. When we walk in the room, tap a finger on the side of the box, they come over & want to be held. Tumbles, Matilda & Fudge especially want held. Lemondrop just wants to fly out of the box when you take the screen off the top....they've given us so many laughs already!!

Okay, I'll keep them inside for a few more weeks :)
Thanks :)

I moved my 7 chicks completely outside at a week old. 90s in the day and 70s at night. No problems.

To answer your question, yes, your chicks will be fine outside for a bit.

Pipemum did you put heat out there with them? I moved mine completely outside at 2 and 5 weeks old no heat lamp and they seem happy and okay even though one night dipped down into the 50's. I want to do one more hatch if I can safely put that hatch in the coop after just one week. I don't like keeping chicks in the house.

I have several brooder coops, which are all outside. Each has a heat lamp. I open the ramp door at three weeks and let them go outside into their brooder run at will. I make sure they are back in at night, whcih they do by themselves after one or two days. The heat lamp stays on at night. I have a thermostat that is gradually turned down. If it looks like it will rain, I make sure they are inder the coop or inside, but I don't coddle them. They thrive. Daytime temps this past couple of weeks has averaged about 77F, and overnight has averaged about 54. The temp inside the brooder coop stays at about 75-85 F overnight with the heat lamp. As soon as they are fully feathered, the heat lamp will be removed and the ramp door left open.
