Can we all just get along? RANT

I have a question - are the similarities more or less important than the differences?

Oh, and I do respect others' opinions, I just take issue when they have screwed-up facts.

Although I agree that screaming is a bad idea, as it's not very conducive to intelligent and respectful debate, which I'm sure you have no problem with.

First: What many seem to forget is that this is not a religious or political debate forum and there are other places on the net set up to accommodate this. It is a POULTRY forum.

Secondly: What one takes as fact the second will take as a wrong because people interpret words and sentences differently. There own life experience colors their views also. So based on this, debate is useless. Agree to disagree and move on makes for a better BYC.

If I may, when I said "facts," I was referring to undeniable historical events, as in, so-and-so did thus-and-such then, as well as (common and understandable) logical mistakes such as appeals to the majority, appeals to authority, post hoc ergo propter hoc, etc. And yes, I realize I am often guilty of these, so don't take it as a criticism of others. When this is factored in, debate is not useless, as readers, if not the participants, can see that one side has the better argument. Debate only becomes useless when it leaves the area of "civilized debate" and turns into a mudslinging contest.

Have you seen how nasty some of those forums can get also. I think the point is. If we step back and consider how we would like someone to listen and respect our opinions then maybe we would act a bit better. Its not that any of us have to agree but common courtesy. You can apply that to poultry, farming, cooking, child rearing, religion, and politics. The simple fact is that when that courtesy is lacking then no matter the topic issues will arise. I think the moderators would love love love if this concept would take hold and spread a bit. They could probably lay off the Rolaids at that point.

And we are all guilty of this at some point. So its not a finger pointing game.

I wish that it were guarunteed that everyone would RESPECT the ideas and opinions of others, even if there is disagreement and debate. Unfortunately, there's always the random people that can't do anything but call names and/or generally act like jerks.

The Mods deserve a lot of respect for dealing with those people as effectively as they do.

"Nasty" is an understatement; you would be stunned at what I've had to put up with on forums that are set up for politics. For every one respectful and intelligent person, there are 20 or so hateful maniacs that can't refrain from swearing and dirty jokes.

In other words, I agree 100%.

Princess; the problem with a religion thread is that many religions leave no room for debate. The very mention of different views cause some readers to try to 'save' the others. In some cases it is disrespect; in others, just good intentions gone ary. Even discussions about spirituality eventually take a turn for the worse. It's best to find another forum for religious discussions...IMHO...

NO as a matter of fact we can NOT all get along... because somewhere there will always be some Mom forcing some poor kid to eat a big ol' bowl of lima beans... scarring them for life.

*waits for the lima growers union to strike*

Also I do agree with Q9 comments and Noodleroo has a good point that many of the wonderful religious threads went downhill...some of us are so hot headed and some just indifferent about the whole thing. And Moderators often have to remind us to play nice or the thread gets shut down. There were three wonderful threads and all of them have points that I never thought of and a healthy dose of respect for those who tried to make peace or make themselves clear in the topic they feverishly believe in.
