mom'sfolly :

I think for true believers in "one true religion" have trouble accepting that other faiths or belief systems may be valid. If a person wholeheartedly believes that their religion is the only true one, they will not see the need to be respectful of different beliefs. If the true faith also embraces conversion, it is the true believer's responsibility to convert, not to discuss, debate or potentially even tolerate another point of view.

It is hard to discuss things calmly and with civility if you think the other party is deluded, misinformed, or otherwise wrong. This is why so many religious discussions go south so quickly. The moderators have to be very zealous to keep things inoffensive.

For the OP, an agnostic that doesn't hold any firm religious viewpoint is probably someone who is more tolerant of different points of views than someone who holds their beliefs hard.

When you look at the various religious texts, there is only room for one religion to be true - they are almost entirely mutually exclusive. Yes, there are similarities, but the core differences are overwhelming.

However, one thing I have always been taught is that if someone is NOT interested, don't keep hitting them on the head with it. That just seems like sense - after all, what better way to turn someone off than to get on their nerves?

People have been starting, and fighting wars and killing each other over religion for thousands of years. I don't see that ending anytime soon, so is it any surprise that folks on internet forums can't agree?
I will not say why I believe some people have such a hard time believing in anything except what they were taught, but I run an establishment and everyone knows the hard and fast rules are no politics and no religion (at least if it gets heated enough to get my attention).

Oh, I can probably guess. People like the comfort of the familiar. Oftentimes, other truth truly threatens to destroy one or more of the fundamental beliefs of their world. I wasn't too happy, to say the least, about 2 years ago when I started coming across a series of uncomfortable, but undeniable, truths that destroyed a myth I held dear. Nobody likes to have a belief they've defended their whole life shattered.

Me too!!!!! I was reading through this whole thread just to see if I could find anyone that posted this way, and it turns out to be someone in my same city! WOW!!!

I can't imagine ANY reason whatsoever to have ANY religion/political posts on a chicken forum. For it to be up to the moderators whether the posts are suitable or not is discrimination itself. The posts should be removed immediately, not closed or doctored. Same goes for this post and others like it.

This might pertain to the discussion here...

There are just a handful of topics that *don't* work here and end up getting flushed quickly. Unfortunately, for a lot of people, discussion of personal beliefs like religion or politics is just not possible without getting into a debate, which almost invariably leads to argument.

It would be nice if people here could be the way PK is asking in her original post, but a quick read-through of even THIS thread revealed a few posts that could provoke someone to getting offended (my opinion, based on past experience).
