Can you candle Marans eggs?

Yes, it's possible to candle *any* egg! lol

Really?

Have you tried candling an Emu egg?

Maran eggs are tough. Even with a high intensity candling lamp it's difficult to see much. Chickens don't candle their eggs tho, so check air space and keep going

I usually can see the chick moving around day 10,forget looking for veining, lol, then it becomes a dark mass. I can usually see if it the egg is clear all the way through. Those are the only eggs I discard. The others I keep, just in case.

I use to carry a surefire on duty but I found something else in my outdoors stuff that outshines it by a long way. I run dogs at night, fish at night etc. I have a 12v bandit belt light (A.K.A coonhunters light) on the high side setting its brighter than a car head light

You have to be careful though because on the higher settings can put out a lot of heat. I cut a hole in a piece of cardboard and set the egg in the hole. I can candle pretty dark eggs by day 5 . Not sure about Marans eggs though.

Jean,
So you tape the toilet paper roll to the front of the flashlight? Is it an empty roll or a full roll?

and do you just place it on the bottom of the egg and shoot the light up through the toilet paper roll and then through the egg?

I've got to do this on Thursday - day 7... so let's see what happens. Expect the light colored ones to be relatively easy, but my Marans are brick red/brown colors... oh, yes, like the avatar.

Thanks all.

I just held the "empty"

toilet paper roll on top of the flash light with one hand and gently moved the egg around on the top where the light comes through. You should be able to see in it, I have not done real dark eggs that way though, just my ameraucana eggs.

My flash light was a "maglight", hopefully yours is super powered....

It's a little harder than using a candler, but it will make due.
