There are multiple species of marmot. Woodchucks / groundhogs are a type of marmot.

Marmot of some sort. If woodchuck / ground hog, then something other than color is different from those I see in Missouri, Illinois and Indiana.

Thw woodchuck / ground hog is the only marmot they have in VT, which is where the OP lives. I thought this was too dark for a woodchuck, but I just read there is a black phase, which this appears to be. So black phase woodchuck is my guess.
