Can you help me with these girlies?

Yeah, I sorta thought the little black and whites were Hamburgs. You really think they're Marans? Wow, how cool is that? I'll bet you're right though, they may be just starting on a breeding program to get those colors....

SeramaSweetie - Cool! I have one chicken that I still didn't know what it was. I googled mottled java and that is what she is! Like I had said I got a "Hatchery Surprise" from Cackle. I have thoroughly went through their website and I couldn't find anything that looked like this hen. The black and white spots are exact, speckled legs, single comb... That is definitely what she is! I was about to put her picture up... It seems when you get an assortment from a hatchery you also get breeds that they aren't quite ready to offer officially.

I'm so HAPPY!

I have got to go do chores but this site just won't let me go...

I don't see Black Copper Marans listed on McMurray's website. I would bet it's a black sex-link.

I had some that laid eggs alot like that. My Australorps also lay eggs about that dark as well.

BUT!!!!! Here's an idea. Since RIR x Barred Rock will give a black sex-link...who's to say they did NOT use a Cuckoo (which is barred, and is what they have for sale) hen under a RIR?

That would give the offspring the chance of laying darker colored eggs than using the Barred Rock bird.

copper marans are not a common breed, and those that are floating around don't always produce such nice dark eggs. Cuckoo Marans are more common, but again, they don't always lay such dark eggs either. (and yep, they're barred) If McMurrry is working on getting some Black Coppers developed, I'm not sure why they'd send the chicks off, but if they did, enjoy them!
