Can you help with breed and gender of these chickens

I agree with both of these, assuming that the Rainbow Ranger to which TaraBellsBirds is referring is a Dixie Rainbow (also marketed as Pioneers) as opposed to a Red Ranger. Whatever name the tan pullet was marketed under, she is definitely a hybrid.

Oh, I've been wrong, believe me. I do appreciate when folks come back and post a few months down the road, especially when it's not a clear cut answer. I'm always trying to learn!

I like it when they post back too! Always nice to see how they change. I don't know why I enjoy sexing chickens so much LOL, it's probably my favorite thing to do on BYC

This one is interesting though, you are quite often right on. Poor OP this is a tough one, cause it's 3 to Donrae......not sure how that measures up LOL, cause Wyandottes7 is spot on most times too!!!

You two are the ones I've picked up the most from on sexing

. I have a couple mix breeds that have flip flopped on me, maybe I should post them and see what you guys think! The roos are due for Pocco Pollo's clinic in a week!!!!

Yes, post them! I have to say, I'm worse at sexing my own birds I see every day than I am working with photos online. I look at my own birds and think too much about it, and rationalize, and then denial kicks in......

Years ago when I didn't know near as much, I had a big, pretty EE cockerel who pretty much had a black breasted red pattern. Pretty easy to tell male from female with those by color, but at the time I had no clue. I didn't realize Betty wasn't a pullet until he was a good 6 months old

but I've developed a much better eye over the years since him!

Glad to know I'm not the only one! I swear these guys are changing sex on me though! I will make a new thread.

Good luck OP, keep us updated!

Thanks Guys. I am not going to tell her that Winnie is possibly a Fred, not yet anyway. It will break her heart. I can't have a rooster where I am. I am super happy that the determination for the Black Ameraucana (Ana) is a pullet. She seems to be the leader of the flock and I just love her.

After a closer look at the photo of the buff/tan bird, I'm going to go with Donrae's guess and say that it is a male. The comb appears to be a pea comb, and I think it has three rows. I'm not seeing any saddle feathers yet, however (but those can come in late). The red on the wings is a little concerning as well.

I can't really see the comb on it well enough to tell how many rows it has. A good close up of the comb would be good though.

I'll try to get a close up of her (him?) but unfortunately it is a pea comb with 3 very well defined rows. Not looking good for this little guy. I'll have to give her up but don't have the heart to cull her and have her on my dinner table.

I just took this pic a few days ago of our 7-week old Dixie Rainbow pullet--they are HUGE birds as compared to our Olive Eggers. Yours looks more leggy and not as ginormous as our Dixie Rainbows (they're actually Pioneers from McMurray).

Is this what he/she looks like? The other ones I have exhibit more of the red coloring I see on yours--this one is kind of specked buff and gray.

Here's another. I would definitely say Dixie Rainbow looking back and they mature early, in my very limited experience (1st flock!)--the males had giant combs and wattles by 6-weeks. I wouldn't give him/her away just yet...they just started crowing this week...
