can you keep a hen/coop in a basement?

Yeah, one or 2 great points here. That is why I posted.

My intent was not to have 'frankenchickens'. That just comes off as ridiculous and evil-sounding. Not a very welcoming reply to someone's FIRST post ever-on here.

My post wasn't meant to be hostile, but your suggestion (sans the details about your basement) horrified me! Far too many people are cruel to animals just to entertain themselves or to have their wants met.

Thank you to the poster/s whom replied (Demosthine and Sadie) with rational, non-judgemental, NON-DRAMA posts.

In the meantime, what was "irrational" or "dramatic" about suggesting you check with feed stores for people who sell eggs from happy, healthy, pastured chickens (which is the reason for not getting them from the grocery store)? Sounds very rational to me. People who live in glass houses shouldn't be so sensitive: who's being judgmental *now* (see your quote above this line)?

Besides. Having kids provide a chicken with attention isn't even close to being with other chickens.

Ma'am...if you've re-read your original post, and you don't see anything wrong with your choice of 'verbiage', then you're never gonna see anything wrong with your choice of verbiage. Thus, talking about it (and to you-since you're newest post still comes off as confrontational) is a waste of your and my time.

You seem to lack this: Diplomatic suggests a smoothness and skill in handling others, usually in such a way as to attain one's own ends and yet avoid any unpleasantness or opposition.

Have a nice day, 7 Biddies and thanks for your time.

Here's two posts that give a bit of advice in approaching the HOA. There's some wasteful posts in there, but there are a couple of good ones. It should get you started though. I'm fortunate enough not to have an issue. My city is very lenient on their laws and I have no HOA, so I'm pretty useless when it comes to the details.

City says chickens ok, HOA says no, what to do?

What does your HOA think of Backyard Chickens?
Thank you so much, Demosthine! I am putting my idea on hold, and will likely not do it. But, I am going to get some fertilized eggs for our experiment! It will be fun.
Thanks for the links, I will check them out.

I just raised (6) chicks in the basement to 6 weeks old and moved them out last week. The smell got pretty bad and we cleaned the cage a couple times a week. I am not sure if (1) would be bad. I used pine shavings as the bedding. It may work if you cleaned it everyday. Good luck.

Can you have a 10 x 12 shed, with windows, that allows vents and a door, also with sliding window????? I'm thinking like the Royal Outdoor shed.... https://www.google.com/search?q=Winchester+shed&rlz=1C1CHMO_enUS514US514&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=tLyHUbPNNsmzyQG064HYCg&ved=0CDsQsAQ&biw=1122&bih=601#rlz=1C1CHMO_enUS514US514&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=royal+outdoor+products+shed&oq=Royal+Outdoor+&gs_l=img.1.0.0j0i24l9.228073.231555.5.235178.14.10.0.4.4.0.124.1135.0j10.10.0...0.0...1c.1.12.img.EOTuFodS4j4&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45960087,d.aWc&fp=80b7152a6518a02d&biw=1122&bih=601&imgrc=f7QnxB7BX0kY-M%3A%3Bd04T80dpwzXh4M%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fimages.lowes.com%252Fproduct%252Fconverted%252F710809%252F710809510128xl.jpg%3Bhttp%253A%252F%252Fpicsbox.biz%252Fkey%252Froyal%252520outdoor%252520products%252520storage%252520sheds%3B500%3B500

You can keep three to four in that shed, even they can not free range but they would be confined in THAT shed. One time a neighbor that kept pigeons, had one window that the pigeons can fly to the window, stop into a wire cage (Havaheart kind) on one length of the shed, droppings on below (you can do tilling to mulch!) and the hens can come and go in that wire run. It runs from one end to another, not on the ground but half way up the shed about chest to waist height from the ground. I know wire is bad on their feet but for some sunshine and a bit of fresh air, it would outweight everything else. No loose chickens either!

Vinyl sheds or wood sheds would be ideal. I love my Royal Outdoor shed!!!

See if that works! Unless HOA prohibits sheds.
