run a set of books a simple income and expenditure ledger will work when you water them in the evening figure out how much your water cost figure what your feed cost is if or when they need medicine write it down find out how much feed it takes to produce a salable piece of quail meat or hatching eggs then mark it up 40-75% to "get it through" your books the only thing one of my cell phones is for is business when the bill comes the receipt is entered in the expenditure ledger ................. mine is run concurrently with meat sales from turtles and nuisance animals as well so at any given time through the year my customer can buy quail meat , beaver meat ,groundhog ,nutria , crabs , catfish etc etc

Same here, my 3 leghorn roosters and a welsummer pullet sold, but my coturnix went for nothing. No eggs sold online either, just one local sale. Now I have 90 eggs in lockdown and nobody to buy them. It's a bad time to expand so it looks like I'm eating quail.

Depends on how much you want, you can make money even with a dozen birds, but obviously will be not much.
Imagine this, a dozen chicken eggs (in my zone) are about 3 bucks, so knowing I consume prob an egg a day this means around 7.5bucks per month in eggs (84bucks per year budget).
If you have quail you buy a feed bag for about 3bucks that for a dozen quail lasts for 3months (12bucks a year of feed), and you get ~11eggs a day this means that you don't need to buy chicken eggs.
So in an year 84-12=72bucks that you saved/made because you can spend in other stuff.
Now if you multiple the numbers you can start selling, and even eating quail which reduces your meat bill = more money.

I hatch and sell between 3 and 4 thousand Buttons, Bobwhites and Coturnix quail a month out here in Phoenix. I get $2.00 for day old to week chicks and six to eight dollars for adults. I have even sold adult pairs at some of the local bird marts for $20.00 and $25.00 I guess it just depends on your local market.
