can you make money on quail?

Profit is whats left after you figure your material expenses and Labor, nobody is figuring labor onto it. Consider the time spent feeding, gathering eggs, building pens, candeling eggs, hatching, cleaning cages, and thats just some of the basics assuming all goes well. Now add that into the above equation and i bet it comes out less then your day job.

My post was based on the title of this thread.
You can easily pay for the food.
The rest depends alot on how serious one wants to get, business or just as a hobby and raising for their own food

Spotsplus,
I was wondering if you are selling them as pets? Or food or breeders?

I live in Texas just outside of Dallas and it seems that in this area people are selling their week old chicks for $1 each (what I paid for mine). I plan on growing them out for meat but want to eventually sell some so that they are self supporting or even profitable.

I sell Buttons as pets and Coturnix as pets and eggs. Never for hunting or feeders. :)

So you sell as pets not "feeders" (food for snakes?) to maximize you earnings.

If we are looking at this from a profit perspective what would you say your profit on a $5 bird is?

As for hunting I thought the Bob White were the only ones that were hunted. I see a lot of people in the area offering to come and do a release of Bob Whites for people to hunt at a "party". To me this sounds a bit like cheating as it takes the sporting chance out of the hunt.

The reason there is a demand for bob whites to hunt is that there are almost none left in many parts of the country including SC where I live. They just don't have the environment to live in and being a ground bird there is obviously a lot of natural predators. You could hunt for a week and not see a covey of quail in the same areas where my dad and brother would hunt several times a week after school when they were my age...

Ahhhaaaa! The good old days of Quail hunting. Thats why I saterted raising them.
Same here. I see you raise bobwhites, would you say they more profitable than coturnix? We're thinking about getting some bobs this spring.

Are you still selling buttons? I am interested CT. Do you ship? I am interested for our therapeutic farm, please advise and thank you!
This thread is 14 years old and the person you're replying to hasn't logged in since 2008, so probably not.

If you were closer to me, I would love to sell you some buttons, but since I'm not NPIP certified I can't send you eggs. Good luck in your search! You might try posting in your state's thread.
