Thanks everyone for all the great info and advice. I also have 2, 9 month old Buff Silkies, who are obviously males, due to the constant crowing lol they are both very vocal. The smaller chick looks A LOT like my teenage buff boys. Now, the bigger chick DOES have dark skin, feathered feet, and 5 toes, which I thought were ONLY traits that a silkie could have. So, what do you think she/he is mixed with??

My Vader is a sweet heart too. I have decided that I am going to just love them and not stress over sex anymore. As long as everyone gets along it doesn’t matter. Of course I say that till the next batch hatches. Lol
Is that Vader in your profile pic?? If so, he is Gorgeous!

Agree with everyone above bigger Silkie is a mix and silkies change so much between 4 and 7 months. My roo didn’t get any of his roo features until after 7 months but started crowing at 4 1/2 months. He is the Silkie in my profile pic but here he is at 5 months in his gawky teenage phase. Most of my pullets started laying at 7-8 months I have a couple that are 8-9 months and not laying or crowing so the jury is still out on them.

So stinking cute!!! Yes, now your silkie looks just like my buff Silkies in this younger pic. (Percy and Presley) I'll take some new pics and put them on here this afternoon. Thanks for your reply.

Are any of your silkie Roo's aggressive? I have a Porcelain De Uccle, who Percy constantly picks on. I understand establishing the pecking order, then going about your business as his brother Presley does, but not Percy. He DOES NOT stop pursuing Elvis, the Uccle. And my newest addition, Romeo, a 13 month old white silkie. Presley and Romeo battled, Romeo won, Presley walked away, and it was over. They get along fine. But Percy and Romeo battled, it was a tie, Romeo walked away. Percy was out for blood. Another fight, this time it was more vicious, Romeo won. Percy retreated, only to return 5 minutes later and the fight was on again. Once again, Romeo holds the title lol I assumed that they had finally established that Romeo was the older, dominant roo but Percy still will not accept not being the dominant male of the flock. Not wanting a blood bath, or for either one of my boys to get seriously injured, I went ahead and separated Romeo, he is now in a separate coop with my 2 chicks. He's the only chicken I have that has accepted the babies. Now, I know not to introduce the chicks to the flock until they are bigger and around the same size as the others. So I've been introducing them by keeping them in a large dog crate, and letting the other silkies come check them out. I know that in some cases it can be hard for males to get along, but it is possible. I'm hoping that each day will get better by slowly integrating Romeo with the boys. However, if it does not, it's no big deal to keep Romeo in with the chicks, and Percy and Presley can remain in their coop, and I can let them free range during different shifts.

I have 3 juvenile silkie's and I introduced them to my male who's a year old, while my hen was broody. He is so good with the young ones. He stepped right in to show them the ropes. He is actually the real dad. But I incubated these. Now my hen is done being broody and she's trying to be bossy. It's so cute how my male will put treats on one end of pen for the hen and have treats for the juveniles away from her. He's a good daddy

Thanks for your reply. This gives me hope lol and they are very smart birds. Romeo is already very protective over these 2 chicks, who are no relation to him at all. The juvenile boys have tried to peck through the crate, not sure if it was aggressive behavior or just curiosity yet, but I didn't want to take any chances. I think in time, they'll live together just fine. Especially as they mature.
