Can you show me nesting box pics?

maybe so you can open them up and reach in to collect eggs? I'm still not sure I'm clear on the whole set up, so more pics would be cool, but from your description, the door on top almost sounds like an e g g door to me...

Yes, I think my husband is starting to realize that he has effectively helped me to create (well clean out and restore) a retreat away from the kids and chaos...because on the weekend I can be found in that chair now with my chickens and a favorite novel

so maybe I leave the top closed, they go in from the back, and then I lift up to collect the eggs. That would make sense. Maybe I should let them close down more then. I will try to get some better pictures in a little bit to post.

that's awsome ! what a feeling you must have being in that building imagining the folks that came before you. like others have said i would not change a thing.

I've heard that set-up described by someone that writes for one of the homesteading magazines or maybe a homesteader's website that I found. The hens like dark secure places that make them feel safe from predators, so they give them dark boxes and a dark passage to get to them. You would raise the lid to get the e g g s as you don't want to put your hand where you cannot see. Might get an unpleasant surprise. Plus you need access to clean them occasionally.

My husband thought I was completely nuts when I first presented the idea. He wanted to make the whole upstairs barn an entertainment room and here I sneak in begging for chickens to restore the coup back to its original homestead feel. I LOVE the history, the smell of the old wood, the huge floor to ceiling windows facing the back yard...the southern exposure window that lets in great early spring light. I am hoping we can take care of all the darn neighborhood cats and build a little wire covered bridge to the backyard (its a second story coup with a full door that is parallel to our backyard but it would be a straight drop down without a ramp. I want to let them free-range this summer badly. And theres still plenty of room for an entertainment room on the other side...it will just be adjacent to the chickens

heres the pic of the windows and the dreadful amount of yardwork we face from them lol

we just started a full railing around the coop door thats in the floor to keep the kids (and us) from stepping on it and falling through to the staircase....

Ok, I'm new to this message board BUT I have seen something like this in a book. Only difference is that they put handles so they would slide out so they could be taken outside bleached clean and air dried!

We will be making a new coop and I know exactly what I will be doing for nesting boxes now! They are perfect!

Yes, put the hinged doors completely down. They will use the passage to get in and out of them.

Could you please email me the pictures that you have of the nesting boxes so that I can show my hubby? I know by the time we get ready to build our new coop I will never find these pics again.

my email: [email protected] (0-number zero & 1-number one)

Thanks Debs
