I am brand new to this site and raising chickens. We have 12 that are supposed to be hens but one is acting different even seems to be trying to crow. Can anyone tell by these pictures if it is a rooster? Appreciate the help.

How old is this bird? To me it looks like a hen! If it is a rooster its comb would start farther back in its head, but you never know fully until they'll older.

Forgot my introduction.............

We live in the state of Mississippi close to the Louisiana border. Since moving here 7 years ago, I have been wanting to get some hens so we could have fresh eggs. I have repeatedly given my husband hints of this and he has finally caught on, you know that old saying "What what you ask for". March 21st was our 20th anniversary, the day started out as usual work 8-5 and then getting home to go out for dinner. Should have known something was up when I walked in the house, hubby and our two boys were sitting in the living room (quietly - this should have been the give away) and I went to my room to get ready. A few moments later I was called back into the living room, (did I mention how quiet they were) as I walked down the hallway I heard an unfamiliar sound. By the time I reached them I was laughing because I knew what they had done. SURPRISE they said, as I saw the box with 12 little baby chicks!

So now they are 6 weeks and we have noticed one acting a bit differently. We are enjoying the girls very much and wanted to make sure we know what we have.

Cockerel, he has the "mark of doom (male) " red over wings . You can also post on the "what breed or gender is this thread." for more opinions.

Welcome!

Aaaw, what a lovely surprise! Sorry, I am sitting on the fence on this once, not convinced either way but the attempting to crow at a young age is ominous. While hens will crow sometimes, they are usually older. Will you be able to keep him if it is a him?

This is a link to the Breed & Gender Forum Diva mentioned: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this
