thanks for all the info, I will be a camera junky for a while, but starting to take better pictures already. figured I will keep it simple and then try harder things,

I would shine a bright light onto the chicks, both to light up the entire space and eliminate distracting flash, take more so you can get them in a really cute pose eventually, and clear away the stuff in the background.
