Can you train a parakeet not to say specific words?

When I was a kid, we had parakeets all the time and one Mynah. The Mynah, Koko, spoke much more clearly. He learned to say, "I don't like you" and shared that gem with visitors. He cage was close to the TV, and he picked up phrases from the Bullwinkle cartoons; he even taught one of the parakeets to mimic a few of his words.

However, the parakeet was much less adept at talking. Most people had no idea what the little guy was saying. Good luck with keeping yours from getting foul (fowl?) mouthed!

There is one point though: If you are not planning to keep a parakeet in your room or close by, chances of them becoming tame are very low.
I mean, they can live happily with their own kind in an aviary (bigger and more expensive option to 'not in the house') but unless you are planning on sitting in there for hours - again, chances are they won't get anywhere near tame.

one can train a parakeet to talk, but they do not pick it up as readily as their bigger parot cousins. I would be unconcerned.
But you know how that goes!
We had budgies all my young life & they are chatting in a parakeet sort of way.
In Canada they are budgies. In Calif. they are parakeets. We've had several of them & they are the same type of bird. They all are beautiful & cute no matter what you call them.
