Can You Use Hay With Mold In It For Bedding ? Need Answers Quick!

Never use anything moldy with your animals.

They don't need a heater, they wear down coats and will be fine.

You can give some corn for added energy for body heat, but don't switch to feeding only corn. Keep them on their regular feed and water.

Okay. Will Tell My Mom, Thanks FLChicken, You Could of saved 3 chicken Lives.

What is the urgency?
Why do you not wish to give them laying mash in the wiinter?
They must have a nutritionally complete food available at all times in addition to any treats like corn, fruits, veggies, sunflower seeds.
Heat is a much discussed issue here on BYC. Cold tolerance depends on the bird. I'm in NJ and my roo BJ always needed heat in the winter. He did well in the heta of the summer but did not like it very cold. You have to know your birds. And if you have heat you have to be very careful to set it up in such a way that you do not have a fire hazard. In the winter, also avoid drafts.

Is your coop an enclosed coop? If so suplimental heat is really not needed. Most breeds are old hardy and deal with cold over summer heat much better. They need the layer feed year round to keep them healthy. Feeding only corn is like you eatting nothing but fast food and candy. It will make them fat and unhealthy.

The only time chickens need a heat source in the cooler/colder months is new chicks still feathering. Most in cold locations don't raise new chicks though when it's cold out. We hatch year round, our brooding house 20'x24 is heated to 75 during the cooler months with heat lamps on brooding cages to increase for day olds. We also have AC in this building or summers here. Our rabbits live in it as well.

My Coop Is NOT Enclosed. I Have BO's You Know, How " Hardy " are They? I Have No Chicks.... I Think I Will ( ask My Mom To ) Get Laying Mash For them. I Don't Want to feed them that Because It's Expensive.

But I think now days That Better " Fuel " Is More Expensive These days, with Food, Cars, Clothing, And Now I Guess Chickens! What is this World Coming To?

I just want to commend you for coming here to ask important questions to try to take the best possible care of the birds who depend on you and your family.

Can you explain what you mean by "not enclosed"? Can you possibly post pics? You're right - it can get quite cold in NC - they will need protection from the elements, including drafts.

Unfortunately, if birds are not fed nutritionally complete food they will get sick. Not sure how many birds you have but a 50 pound bag of food - kept carefully protected so it doesn't mold - lasts a good long time for a small flock. If feeding them properly is a problem, maybe it would be best for them to be adopted by someone who can provide what they need. That might be the kindest thing.

We totally understand about costs and you're right - everything is sure more expensive these days!
