Can You Use Hay With Mold In It For Bedding ? Need Answers Quick!

You've also asked about heat. More important than heat, is to somehow make your coop draft-free. No matter how much heat you give them, if they're in a draft, they could get sick and die. I live in MN where it gets down to -20 to -30 for days at a time. My chickens do not have heat in their coop. It's draft-free, ventilated, and not insulated. You have BO's - they're pretty cold hardy. I'm not sure what kind of chickens your grandpa had that froze to death. Were they very young and not fully-feathered? That's the only reason I could imagine a chicken freezing to death in NC. I'm glad you and your mom are getting things worked out. I am curious, however, as to why you don't want them laying in the winter? I think if they're going to lay, they're going to lay whether you give them layer feed or not...

I'm glad you got the answers you needed to convince your Mum. I must say though... someone needs to tell your Mum that providing proper nutrition and bedding for your pets should not need her agreement or permission. It's basic good sense, not to mention responsible pet ownership. How would she feel if someone told her she could only put you to bed on damp sheets and feed you nothing but potato chips all winter?

About the feed... I have three chickens and I feed them layer mash. Since I changed to a mash without sunflower seeds in it (which they used to dig for and waste a lot of the other stuff) I now go through a 20kg (40lb) bag of feed in about 8 weeks or so, as well as free ranging them in the yard a little each day and giving them them our leftover veges and cooked rice and corn cobs from time to time. Stored in a plastic rodent-proof barrel the mash stays perfectly dry even though here in Australia we have quite high humidity and lots of heavy rain in Summer.

She was Just a Bit Skeptical about Getting BOTH Pellets AND Corn. she wanted More People to say that, So SHE Could be convinced.

I, On the Other hand, Know Perfectly well about the Nutrition Of my Flock... Maybe Not Perfectly, But i Do know ( Now ) That they need More than just Corn.

Thanks Guys,
