Can you use something other than DE for the smell?

TX_Dane_Mom:

If you're in Texas, and got muddy pen problems -- put down SAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is awesome! Sand about 2" thick - USE PLAY SAND or sand you can get from a mulch/dirt place. spread all over or just all over the wet areas!!! instant dry - like a beach!

We use SAND totally. never had a muddy day since. each year in spring we re-sand the runs. works like a champ and they love dusting in it when it gets real dry outside.

If you use sand does it wash away when it rains? I might make my chickens a sand box so they will have a place to dust bath when the ground is wet.

I'm wondering. Can you use dead leaves like I do to control the smell of my compost heap? It kills the smell of the grass and food stuffs decomposing. Would it work for the coop and run as well or would it cause problems.

Sweet PDZ is awesome. It is an all natural mineral that is non-toxic and non hazardous and completely safe to handle. And it takes the smell away fast.

I have a tarp (camo colored in summer, now it will be clear nursery plastic soon, to let in the light) over more then 1/2 of the chunnel; the ground does not slope into the tarped area, so it stays nice and dry, and the girls have their choice of where they want to go.
