I neverever had any geese b4. at auction last night I bought a goose that was listed as holderread but this morning looking on the net it is a canadian. Can you get in trouble for having them? and if so what should I do with it?

I think you may need paperwork with the Canada goose to show that it is captive bred and not stolen from the wild. Being that they are migratory waterfowl they are protected federally. Look up the laws in your state and county.

You don't need a permit if you have less than 5 but you aren't supposed to sell them or their eggs/young either. Being that they are a federally protected species I'd say this goes for anywhere.

Actually you do have to have a 3-186 transfer form to have them. The seller should have provided you with this wether your buying eggs or adult birds of any number to state that they are captive breed. Then if you want to sell them or any of their offspring/eggs you have to have a Federal migratory bird waterfowl sale and disposal permit.

It doesn't sound like they were truthful at the auction he bought the goose from, they didn't even say it was a Canadian. It is highly unlikely he will be able to get any paperwork from that individual.

Unless the auction house might be able to help......Are you positive that it is a Canadian goose? Can you post a picture?

Was this an in-person auction? If you can prove to them that this goose was a Canada goose and that they didn't have the proper paperwork, you should be able to return the goose and get your money back, especially if you are not allowed to legally sell them otherwise.

But, the short answer to your question is that if you are seen with a Canada on your farm will you get into trouble? Probably not. It's unlikely anyone will check to see if you have paperwork for them unless you are selling them or their eggs.

Do you have a body of water on your farm? If so you can say they flew in. I have a breeding pair who likes my pond. They come back every year. I would like someone to try and get me in trouble for having them, when really they have me and all the treats they want.
