Hi and
welcome-byc.gif

I order Ivermectin from Jeffers every few years when needed. It does have a long expiry date which makes it worthwhile. Let me know if you need help with dosage by pm.

Thank you so much for the link!! I was desperate to try something so I just used a dog flea powder - Used it on Monday night - Tuesday I didn't see any bugs!!!! I am going to leave them alone for a few days - on the weekend I am going to change their bedding and give the coop a good scrub!! Powder them again and offer then wood ashes for a dust bath to make sure I got them all!! if this doesn't work I will try your suggestion!!!

Have a great day!!

Hey, haven't tried any of these on my own chicks yet, but there's a bunch of great ideas on Pinterest! The wood ash that CountryMousette suggested is one I've heard good things about, and there's a recipe here that calls for incorporating garlic powder into your feed, and it works as a a natural repellant. Some folks also suggest panting and using clippings of other fly- and louse-repellant plants like Artemesia Silver Mound, rosemary, basil, and lavender around the coop and in nest boxes. Hope some of that helps, not sure of anything more immediate or hands-on, unfortunately!

Great ideas!!! Thank you! I ended up using a flea powder (suggestion from the breeder) - that seemed to do the trick! I am now offering them a wood ash dust bath bucket :)

Once the weather warms up I will look into planting different things around their coop!! I like the idea of lavender!!!

Thanks so much for your help :)

Awesome... I'll know what to do if ever the natural deterrents fail :)

You're welcome. Please let us know how the flea powder works and if the hens are affected in any way.
This is new territory for most of us and could be an alternative method.

Hi from St-Jean-sur-Richelieu, 30 mins south of Montreal, Qc.

I'm totally new here, although I came often for ideas for my coop (I'll post pictures soon!), and I have quite a lot of (basic) questions. I'm not sure it is the right thread to do so, but I'll just try with 2... :

1. I'm looking for young (pullet?) birds around 20 weeks, ready to lay for the first weeks of summer. I managed to find 2 or 3 places (''couvoir'' in french) where they could sell me what I want, but everywhere the birds have been de-beeked (sorry for my english and chicken-neophyte mistakes) and vaccined. Is that in any way avoidable ? Is there someone in my area that managed to find young natural birds ? Maybe from a smaller farm not ''producing'' them industrially ?

2. I had the dream of having a flock (5 birds) with mixed ''races/breeds'' (again... sorry if...) but I have been told that birds who didn't grow together are very keen to be aggressive to each other... which limits me a great deal in my 'multi-racial-dream-team', having to pick all my birds from the same place.

Thanks for hearing me and sorry if this was not the place to ask those questions. I'll start new threads in that case.

Hi there @Robjnack
If you look around you will find natural birds, maybe younger than your hoping maybe not don't give up, they are out there...
I have a large mixed flock from lots of differnt origins, they do fine together ( ranging in age from 5 years to 2 months, standard sized birds and bantams) Your dream of multi breed chickens will work out just fine. If you get birds from multiple sources you will simply need to introduce them slowly. I even have ducks in the mix with my chickens no problem.
Welcome to BYC
Can't wait for coop pictures!
Ask away here, all of BYC is super eager to help and answer your question and hear your opinions... And it can't get much easier going than the Canadian thread ;)
