Where in NS are you? I love that province. I went to St.FX for 2 years and absolutely loved it (finished my degree in Toronto).
What breeds do you have?
As far as heating goes, I personally don't. We've had several long spells of -40 this year, and they're doing just fine.
I don't provide extra light for them. It's just a personal preference. I believe that their bodies are entitled to a rest, and that we shouldn't tempt mother nature too much. My neighbours have leghorns and have been providing heat and light (5am to 11pm for the light). Their egg production has still dropped by 1/2. They also almost had a coop fire, so that's definitely something you should take into consideration.
From what I understand , most things are transmitted from wild birds, especially mites. I'm sure there are a lot of people who can answer that with far more knowledge than me though.

Very new member, Nova Scotia, 22 year now but from BC originally. 3 kids 5 cats 3 rodents of various kinds and 6 chickens.
Canadian questions at what temperature do you heat your coop? Do add light to get eggs in short days.
Can wild birds get ill and or other way round from the chickens mine apparently are a afraid of the noisy flock of blues jays here.

I only ad the lamp when the coop gets too cold for me to be in there with no mitts

I feel silly but I don’t know what breed they are. They a red brown with creamy down some redder than other variegated around the neck with bright red combs, ears and neck bits &yellow legs.The farm supplie store just calls them layers. They were day olds,dark yellow with dark strips down their backs and tail when we got them. Greenish eyes.
We put them outside at six weeks so heated them if it was not above 0c all the early winter when full grown we started just doing a few evening hours of heat if -5c and lately they get an hour mostly for the light but if it’s-17c it might stay on all night. It’s been cold for Nova Scotia a lot this year but not much snow. The heat lamp is in a wire safety lamp with a reflective back and cage in front and wired to its hook with the cord coming out the top and so it couldn’t really fall. The girls just started laying a month ago, and there is a big window in the coop’s outside wall so possibly we won’t heat it next year.

Hi all.

I'm in S.On i need to drastically reduce my flock... i was diagnosed with COPD and i simply cannot care for them anymore.. i have some help currently but this will not work long term.

Unfortunately, my flock now is mainly drakes after a HORRIBLE year of preds they have left me with few females...

I don't want them just going to anyone, these are nice birds and years of my work... I do know i should be able to get this breathing crud somewhat under control but i have no help! i cannot get outside in the cold and the dirt and dust... i can't breathe.

I don't know what to do.. i don't want to do random kijiji ads. advice?

Hi, I'm from Owen Sound area, Ontario!

Trying to find Australorps, Gold & Silver Laced Wyandottes. Anyone know of any breeders in my area?

Also, what are your thoughts on Perforance Poultry and DC Heritage Poultry?
Some people are saying Performance ships, but on their website it says they do pickup only?
Saw on another thread that DC Heritage Poultry didn't have good reviews...thoughts?

I haven't dealt with DC, but I've also only come across negative reviews as well. I bought from PP for the first time last year, but it's 1 hr away so the drive is no big deal. Did have 1 breed mix-up but I personally didn't care and I even forgot to tell them once I realized I had a sliver-laced instead of golden-lace wyandotte.

Either way, the experience was good enough that I'm getting a whole bunch more this year. There is an Ontario chicken site PTO where you could ask if anyone from your area is driving down for a pick-up to save on transportation costs if that interests you. It would also be another place to hook up with local breeders.
