What sorta day old chicks?

Not sure yet I will have mixes as well as purebred EE,s Maran's Leghorns Production reds and Production blacks. So nothing super exciting and honestly It will be a matter of seeing what actually hatches. By the way in about 6 months I will have pure bred lavender orpingtons.

Oh okay! I don't know how many chickens will make it to permanent flock status just yet, but I will know in 6 months! Those lavender orps are so pretty...
Yeah the lavenders are a project I am super excited about I have black and blue split to lavender month old chicks right now I am super excited to find out what there sex is so far there are two that I am pretty certain are boys but the rest still could be hens and then I have 3 lavender roosters who are stunning they are in with my laying hens right now. I think my kids and I are going to pick a few breeds and stick to them so far that is orpingtons, and rhodebars (for me) and silver laced wyandottes (for my daughter we have silver and gold in the incubator), Turkens (for my oldest son expecting a dozen eggs next week) and Mottled Houdan (for my youngest son). It should be interesting as soon as the weather cooperates we will start on breeding pens.

My oldest is 6, and she's already told me that she wants to have her own call ducks.

Since I started researching chickens for our backyard, the one breed I've been most interested in is supposedly a really common breed, but I haven't been able to find a source for chicks locally or hatching eggs, either locally or by mail order. Jersey Giants! I can't find them! They must not be as popular as people say....

Well I was standing over the bator, wiling them to wiggle so I could be reassured that they're not all stone dead in there and I heard a little cheep cheep sound. I played some youtube videos of chicks peeping and cheeping at them and....nothing. I think they are just messing with me.

Then a little later my 6 year old was watching a show in which the main characters were consulting a BABY CHICK on something and it was cheeping at them so I was pretty sure that is what I had heard. I was all bummed and was about to go do something else when for SURE I heard cheeping coming from the incubator. I called my kids in and they heard it too. So...someone has pipped internally. It's so crazy to hear cheeping coming from eggs that could have been breakfast only a few weeks ago...

It is weird! Still love eating eggs though. We tried some duck eggs the other day and quite honestly, I like them more than chicken eggs. Even just fried. So... I don't feel terrible eating some and keeping some, it's all good! LOL
