Candeling and hatching diary.

Wow! How did you all learn so much about incubating eggs? I thought it was much easier. This was so very interesting. I hope to someday incubate some. I have a lot to learn first though. Thanks for going through so much trouble to share your developing babies with us. It is absolutely fascinating.

Those rubbermaid tubs are not cheap! At least I don't think so. One maybe but you said "a bunch" lol. I got an appliance box for mine. I am going to hit up the grocery store for one of those huge watermelon boxes. That'll hold em for a few weeks lol.

I saw some at the Wallymart for like 4 bucks each the other day! Is that cheap? "Feels" cheap to me. Am I outta touch here? The watermelon box idea is GREAT! Might not work for sloppy ducklins though.

You can buy some light weight lumber, and a roll of hardware cloth, or 1" chicken wire, and build a brooder that will double as a tractor. Mine is 3 x 6, and has gotten a lot of use since I built it a year ago. It will house my chicks initially this spring, until I can move them out of the garage.

I work for a wheelchair/mobility store and we sell electric scooters so I am using a cardboard box from a scooter. best thing is I can throw it away when I am done. I have 15 chicks in one they are about 4 weeks old and growing like weeds they will need to go bigger within a couple weeks I line the bottom with newspaper and put shavings over the newspaper there really is not alot of liquid waste with chicks we change there bedding every 3 days because they are in the house and can start to smell. my smaller chicks are in a wire dog kennel that I lined with hardware cloth and they are doing great but couple more weeks and they will out grow it so then I may end up with two brooder boxes as they will still be to small to combine with there older flock mates I am kind of thinking about designing a shelf system to hold the rubber maid totes so I can half the smaller chicks take up less room. By the way I designed a brooder top for the scooter box out of PVC pipe and chicken wire it is kind of universal so I can put it on any of the boxes I bring home from work. Remember at first the chicks do not require a lot of room up high so a low tub works.

If you have to buy more than one at $4 each if you're not going to use them for something else later...that's more than I would want to pay. I'll just use my free cardboard box. I will not be brooding again so this is a one time use thing for me. Free is where it's at lol.

I would love to see pictures I am thinking about a PVC tractor

I'm cheap too, and I'd rather do something else that costs me nothing than spend the money. I have one rubbermaid that we used last year and it worked great. But I'll keep an eye out for alternatives.
