Candeling and hatching diary.

Set three all on lockdown, this set looks like it'll be on time. I candled them, some of them have already pipped their air cells. My lone duck egg from the last set that almost made me give up is about to start hatching any second... it pipped the air cell early this am, and the air cell has expanded greatly- and it's wiggling and moving.

This is my purchased bator, which I moved to a tall steady surface and have taped shut on two sides... hard to pop off, but I can remove the lid easily if I have to. No dog will be messing with churping chicks this time by golly.

I also just got those cubalaya eggs in the mail today. I might start a separate thread for those. I dunno.. might just keep updated here.

I love seeing everyone learning and working on hatching eggs in this thread... this thread has become a wealth of knowledge, especially for those giving this first tries and learning from mistakes that are probably pretty common.

Sadly , today one of my cross silkie appeared to of had a stroke (and died ) or we think it may be mareks disease so we may sell are silkie chicks in the incubator when they hatch ,i do not want any more deaths or do we risk it ? Really upsetting wanted silkies so bad :-(

AWWW so sorry to hear that, what happened??

Sry to hear about your silkie.

I had 2 chicks hatch yesterday, a EE and SS and today so far a BYM and a SS has hatched. The BYM is really pretty, blue Maran x BO. Can't wait to see how it will feather out. I did a real quick candle lastnight and it looks like my double yoker may have quit but keeping it in just in case, their is good veining but didn't see any movement. I was gone the whole day and the kids were watching the bator and said their was a temp spike and at one point it was way low to 93. I have 5 more yet to hatch out of this batch and the next ones go on lockdown Sunday. 2 are externally pipped and 3 are internal so hope they all hatch. I candled my HAL and pulled 25 that were unfertile, the majority were from one of the farmers eggs I bought, I informed him about it and plan on giving him some of the other farmers BYM's I hatch out. Their were 24 of those and 22 are still going. After the kids collect eggs today I'll refill the Brinsea again, will only be adding another dozen or so. I need to hatch some more BLRW and SS of my own.

Could you see a blood ring at all ? We have struggled to see movement before but it hatched in the end .
Congratulations on your other chicks and good luck on the rest .

Ok well I had done some research on mareks and was informed by a vet, the best way to handle that and of course that is if you have it. Is not to allow any new comers into your flock to only hatch out own, it decreases the chances of it spreading and of course getting the entire flock vaccinated. But how old was the chick. Maybe it wasn't mareks. I've had some lose weigh and die off because of our cold weather but also because of a
definiciency.

Their was no blood ring and I haven't candled it again since, I will again this morning sometime. A BYM and BLRW hatched lastnight so a total of 6 hatched so far and 2 BLRW external pipped after just checking. Theirs one of the EE left that was from the broody but was a few days behind the others and the SS yet to show anything. So far this hatch has been pretty good.
