Candeling and hatching diary.

This thread is becoming a real goldmine for information- added to of course, the other goldmines of info on here about hatching eggs.

I hatched out several ducklings over last weekend from my duck group! My store bought incubator is doing the trick it seems. All of them popped out of their shells like kickboxers. Interestingly, with the same dad but two different mothers, the ducklings all look about the same.

My cubalayas, a long wait, are on day 18 today. They were shipped eggs, and wonderfully, I've only had a couple out of the entire shipment not make it this far! I had mostly cubalayas, but a few were a bantam breed tossed in for freebies. All of the eggs that didn't make it were the bantam freebies, which makes me wonder if I had nothing to do with them not making it. Which is fine with me! I can only do so much. I will be posting my long awaited cubalaya group when they hatch if anyone wants photos!

Feels good to have this whole hatching thing down. I have so many chicks and ducklings now though, that these cubalayas are my last group for the year. I've been selling my duck hatching eggs and giving them away since- what I don't set aside for eating of course.

Loving the info and updates here. Great thread!

AWWW what a cutie

Anybody willing to help me with my self control issues I went crazy the last two days and have 6 orders of hatching eggs on there way here and I put in a half a dozen from my new copper maran trio as well as a half a dozen of lavender orps and 17 BBS orps and then I also put in a 1 1/2 dozen of my BYM I guess its ok seeing as how my incubator did sit empty for a few days and I will not have anything hatching for the next two weeks. I sold over 100 chicks last weekend and have changed my focus to trying to hatch mostly pure breds. Very excited about the prospect of the shipped eggs I ordered praying for safe travels for them they should start arriving today.

You have the DISEASE, it's called HD - Hatching disease.. Poor poor thing, there's no cure for it..

I hatched one duckling yesterday and then another one today both were shrinkwrapped and had to be assisted I was clueless on the days to incubate so shocked I managed to hatch both they were thrown into a shipped group they are both Kayugas the one from yesterday is doing great and todays seems ok but ducklings seem to be so slow. I am putting in a Turkey egg today lol another freebie clueless on them also anybody know anything? Also just received my Lavender orpington eggs going to open them and see what they look like.

Two more, one egg left with a pip and the start of a zip. The other eggs haven't pipped yet.

There may be hot spots in this bator. That might explain this early hatch? The temp from what could tell has been steady, but I've been reading from one spot. I didn't calibrate the whole thing, I thought that would be pretty hard in a still air?

Not really complaining though. Not yet anyway!

I measure the temps all over my still air and find I have hot hot spots so I just rotate the eggs around the bator each turning.

My last hatch was dismal. Set 24, 5 hatched, 2 died. I thought for sure the tiny one with the umbilical cord hanging would die also, but she's a fighter! Everyday I'd check and trim just the tiniest amount off the cord. Poor baby was dragging it around... the other 2 seemed to like to peck at it. After trimming it off I'd spray with bactine and put her back. Took a week, but finally just a tiny nub was left. She and the other 2 are 2 1/2 weeks old now. She's still the smallest but looking good and growing. The cord is completely gone but she does have a "bald" spot around her belly button.... but she's fluffy enough to hide it!

You want to talk about hatching disease! Look what I just got home with. Each tray holds 9 dozen eggs and each bator has 12 trays. Their are 4 huge cabinet incubators. I'm the one with the problem here and I can't be stopped, argh!
